New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong continues the atmospheric Haven's Rock series as Casey Duncan investigates a threat to their off-the-grid Yukon town.
Detective Casey Duncan and her husband, Sheriff Eric Dalton, are entering a new chapter of life as parents to their six-month-old baby. Their family is hidden away in the sanctuary town of Haven's Rock where they can live safe and private lives. But when they encounter hikers too close to the borders of Haven's Rock, they realize they're in danger of being exposed.
When they find one of the hikers dead the next day, they realize that their paranoia was justified, but they're no closer to finding out who these people were and what they were doing in the vicinity of Haven's Rock. Only by tracing the hikers' movements, as well as examining the recent behavior of their closest neighbors, the workers of a secretive mining camp, will they be able to figure out where the threat is coming from and shut it down. Otherwise, the lives of everyone in Haven's Rock--and their safe, secure new existence--are at risk.
First Sign of Danger is the fourth installment in the Haven’s Rock spin-off series.

The title is clever, but this story is not Detective Casey Duncan’s first time investigating a murder in the Yukon wilderness. She’s works and lives in a super secret community known as Haven’s Rock with her husband Eric Dalton. They were part of the founding members of this off-the-grid community after living in another secret remote society known as Rockton. There are seven books in the Rockton series and I highly recommend the whole lot of them.

Haven’s Rock is the fresh start designed to “fix” all of the problems they couldn’t resolve in Rockton.
Casey and Eric expected to Haven’s Rock to be near perfect from its inception. Before their secret construction was complete, they realized too late that their town was dangerously close to an unregistered (illegal) gold mining operation. You can learn more about how that impacts strangers around their town in the first three books of this spin-off. What’s important to know (and not a spoiler) is that once again, we see how there’s just too many unsavory people in a small portion of the vast Yukon wilderness.
Major kudos to Kelley Armstrong for continuing to be full of surprises!
I keep reading this series because each book is unpredictable. I don’t think I’ve ever been fully right about any of the murderers and their motives. Armstrong really pins herself into a small box of opportunities because the setting is remote, and has a limited population. Anyone new that is granted residency to their town has been fully vetted for safety. In theory, the danger should only come from the outside. In First Sign of Danger, stumbling upon an injured hiker was seemingly innocent, but it unleashes a very dark storyline and uncovers the secrets of their mining neighbors.

Kristin lives in the PNW with her husband, and three kids. She loves to read YA fiction, fantasy, and romance. She enjoys a few side-hustles, including creating bookreels/booktoks for authors. The only shows she watches are re-runs, and if she’s not reading a book, she’s listening to one.
