Where will the end of the world take you?
TJ Klune has a true gift for storytelling. I can’t help but find each of his stories a microcosm of human behavior, and how humanity grows, evolves, regresses, all in ebbs and flows. Some of his stories are heartwarming collections of joy and delight; other stories force you to look inside yourself and ask the tough questions about human nature and morality.

“We Burned So Bright” is a story about the end of the world, and it highlights many of the thoughts and feelings that one can assume we as a species would face when presented with the true ending of life as we know it. Endings are scary, challenging, and uncomfortable, and this book as more than it’s share of all of the above. It’s amazing how Klune taps into the heart of the human race over and over again, while still managing to keep his stories fresh and new.
The Dark Parts
It should be very clear by the title and the summary of the story, but “We Burned So Bright” is a sad, tragic type of book. It may make you feel the full spectrum of emotions, and run the gambit from terrible fear and crushing grief, but it also has bursts of love and joy. This story really exemplifies the idea that even in tragedy there can be beauty.
“For billions of years, this planet has survived. What was once molten rock gave way to land, to oceans. And from those oceans, the first hint of life. It evolved. It grew. It grew until eventually, we came. We’ve only been here for a fraction of the Earth’s life. In the grand scheme of things, we’re a grain of sand on an infinite beach. But we mattered. All of us. For better or worse, we mattered.”
One of the most important themes that I took from “We Burned So Bright” is that life has balance, and there aren’t always clear cut answers or choices. It’s choosing the best option for you at the time, an then living through the consequences of that choice. Doing the best that we can, day in and day out.
For me, I also learned after reading this book that it’s important to live your life to it’s fullest potential, and to choose to be happy. Choose the people, the places, the things that make you happy. Choose to be happy proactively, and choose it every single day.

Please, reader friend, make sure to be kind to yourself during and after reading this emotion, thought provoking story. It’s beautiful, and I hope it speaks to you like it spoke to me.

I’m Val, and I’m excited to share my love of books with you! I’m a sassy Sour Patch kid from New Jersey, dog mom to Chance the beagle, and much like the rest of the Hive, I’m a coffee lover (I think it’s a requirement to be here). The first book I remember reading voluntarily involved a boy wizard who lived in the cupboard under the stairs, and I’ve been chasing magic ever since. I love Happily Ever Afters, and I love love. My favorite genres are romance and rom-coms, fantasy, and young adult/new adult. If I’m not reading, I’m probably kayaking, watching the Great British Baking Show, or discovering a new craft beer.
