Rhya Fleetwood is a healer, an outcast, and like the realm itself—about to die. Or so she thought. When the ruthless Commander Scythe plucks her from the vile clutches of her executioner there’s no time to feel relief. Her new captor wants Rhya for his own secret ends and they all lead back to the mysterious birthmark which brands her as a Remnant. One of four souls capable of calling forth inconceivable elemental power. Rhya knows she must master the wind that whispers within her and make an escape. But as she is dragged across treacherous terrain with Scythe’s formidable band of soldiers, something keeps her at his side. Inside her, a tempest roars—terror and desire. Soon, she knows she must choose. Follow her magic, or her heart…

“You are the storm, Rhya Fleetwood. And I am. I feel it there, inside me, not so very deep beneath the surface. A hurricane, a tempest.”

Book 1, The Wind Weaver, of Julie Johnson’s Reign of Remnants series is a fast-paced, high-action read. Set in an ancient and embattled world where the four elemental powers are said to exist in four different beings. Fire and water are well-known as leaders in their respective realms, but the others have been lost and the cause for great searches by those who either want to control or to destroy them. Magic exists in the world but not in Anwyvn after the Cull, when those who are “Points”, half-breeds: human and fae, went into hiding or face certain execution if they are found. Since that day the hunt has continued. When they finally find and destroy the only home Rhya Fleetwood has known since she was adopted at a young age, her valiant attempt to evade the hunters ends in her capture and planned execution by the infamous and feared Commander Scythe. But when he massacres the soldiers and takes her captive everything she has thought about her life and herself is about to change.

“You have only begun to scratch the surface of who you are, little wind weaver. Of what you are. of what you will become.”
The Wind Weaver is a captivating combination of romantasy and epic fantasy. Julie builds a fascinating world around a fast-moving plot and enemies-to-lovers relationship. While the story starts out with the FMCs interaction and developing understanding and attraction to the MMC, the introduction of an addition MMC provides an intriguing catalyst to an already combustible dynamic. This greatly impacts Rhya’s discovery of who she is and the depth of the power she possesses. The plot-arc culminates with the epic confrontation one expects in romantasy. A battle that finally unleashes the power and confidence that Rhya has been so desperately trying to understand and make her own. This perfectly sets the state for the next book in the series, The Sea Spinner, scheduled to release in April of 2026.

“For so many years, I feared the darkness inside. All my life, afraid of what I was. Of who I was. I’d been running long before I ever left Seahaven. Holding back those clouds for fear of what would happen if I allowed them to close in. I’m not running anymore.”
I really enjoyed The Wind Weaver and the world that Julie has created for her Reign of Remnants series. It hits all the buttons you expect from a great romantasy story: unique and interesting world, high-stakes conflicts, an authentic FMC who develops into unexpected hero, and romance that smolders until it ignites the pages. Julie’s lyrical writing style fits perfectly for this genre as it helps to further draw the reader into the atmosphere of this treacherous world. The cliffhanger ending was the perfect incentive to make me want to read the next book and follow Rhya’s story!
Tanya’s love for books has been a lifelong passion that she likes sharing with others. Reading is also the thing that relaxes her after a day of juggling the many responsibilities that come with being being wife to an amazing man, mother to four great kids spread around the world, business manager, and farm hand on their place in southwest Missouri; home to Akaushi cattle and a menagerie of pygmy goats, horses, chickens, dogs and cats.
