I admit that I was slightly concerned about what to expect, because I have come to know this author for her small town, Christmas tree farm-adjacent romance stories that are soft, delicate, and lovely. Comparing the delightful “Lovelight Farms” to a story about the ghost of Christmas Past felt too dissimilar to come from the mind of the same author. Also, how is B. K. Borison going to make a ghost story sexy?
Friends, “Good Spirits” is everything you could possibly hope for it to be, and more.
Romantic and Wistful and Magic
“Good Spirits” was the perfect-for-me holiday story. B. K. Borison’s words speak directly to my heart and soul. Her words splash a rainbow of emotions across the page, and I find myself hoarding a little bit more of her magic with every new novel I devour.
I know what you’re thinking — how can a ghost story be romantic? He’s a ghost!
Nolan is definitely not of this world. This Irish fisherman ghost has magic in his chest and the tips of his fingers, and he’s been sent to guide spirits through their memories to find out where they went wrong. He’s jaded, surly, and slightly disgruntled. After dying, everyone expects to ‘go on’ to the afterlife, but Nolan is pretty much stuck.

Cue Harriet, adorable antique shop keeper obsessed with candy canes, Christmas trees, and finding the beauty of the season. Nolan believes that he’s been assigned to Harriet to help show her the error of her ways and guide her to the right path. Harriet has other ideas. She’s made it her mission to get Nolan to the Afterlife.
Unconventionally Beautiful
“Good Spirits” is an unconventional love story, but it’s also an amazing reminder that you are wonderful the way you are. You shouldn’t have to change to fit into the molds of someone else’s design.
Harriet and Nolan are both a little bit broken, and have been bruised by some of the sharper parts of life. B. K. Borison displays her immense talent through relationship development and character growth. Nolan has spent decades of time with terrible people, but a few days with Harriet brings his humanity to the surface and his soul back to life. Harriet selflessly strives to heal Nolan and give him eternal peace, even though it means that she’ll be left heartbroken.
“I could spend an eternity studying you and still not know what you might do next. You give so much of yourself, so freely. You’re… wild with your attentions. Miraculous. I’ve seen so many lives, Harriet, but I’ve never seen someone live like you.”
It would be so easy to lose ourselves in the romance plot and let the lingering emotion line the bin like discarded wrapping paper scraps. However, B. K. Borison makes it clear that on top of the adorable love story, it’s important to remember that everyone deserves love and care for who they are, not who other people want or think we should be. Nolan reminds Harriet of her value and worth, and loves her bright, vibrant, chaotic life.
“Good Spirits” is going to be a novel that I pick up over and over again. I’m going to re-read one of the *60* separate passages that I highlighted when I need to remember that it’s okay to live boldly and color outside the lines.

I am a Libra, who advocates for rescue animals, loves to buy people gifts, travels as often as possible, and has an OBSESSION with special edition books. It all started with HP, Holly Black, and Cassandra Clare and has ended with a personality made up entirely of Romantasy and Dark Romance stories. I am married with 2 dogs and a grumpy cat.
