“Tell me a secret, little witch.”
Marion enjoys her quiet life of solitude in the shadowy woods of the Black Veil, where even the local villagers don’t dare venture. She sells her healing potions at the village market by day and tends to her otherworldly garden by night, caring for her magical bees and furry familiar, Peek, at their cottage.
Then, one moonlit night, she encounters a devilishly handsome male—with powerful wings, sharp fangs, and high fae-like beauty—shot through with a lethal poisoned arrow.
Under her healer’s oath, she’s bound by magic to try to save the mysterious stranger. But as she nurses him back to health, she begins to suspect that Lorik Ravael isn’t quite what he seems. He knows too much about the Black Veil, rumored to be the entrance to the Below, a realm of dangerous magic and soulless monsters. Yet she’s drawn to him, bewitched by his luminous eyes, seductive grin, and silver tongue of riddles.
But as their forbidden desire ignites, she fears Lorik is hiding darker secrets than she imagined—secrets that could cost her a heart she isn’t willing to give.
“…all I want is to be here with you.”

The Midnight Arrow by Zoey Draven is the perfect “snack” for romantasy readers looking for a little something without committing heart and soul to a multi/large book series. There are so many times when I want fantasy and romance to take me away from the stresses of the day but don’t have the time or bandwith to commit to an epic, high intensity saga. That’s why I love finding authors who understand that and give me stories which give me all the feels and thrills of the big books but that I can consume in a short period of time.
While The Midnight Arrow is set in a familiar Draven universe this story has a unique time period and society. Marion is human but gifted with empathy and gentleness that allows her to be accepted in the Dark Veil and enhances her training as a healer. Her introverted nature and lifestyle leaves her content but always feeling like she is incomplete. When she encounters, Lorik Ravael, a gravely wounded, other-worldly male in the forest her oath leads her to do whatever it takes to save him, not knowing that he may be the piece she has been missing all along. Lorik has secrets and a harsh facade but he finds it harder and harder to keep them locked up tight under Marion’s ministrations.

Zoey Draven has written a wonderfully entertaining stand-alone with The Midnight Arrow. Everything about the book satisfied what I was looking for after finishing book 3 of a multi-book, massive romantasy saga. It has great characters, with depth and personality who have chemistry from the start but whose relationship builds at the perfect pace to some serious spice. It has a storyline that keeps you hooked from beginning to end in a world of magic, shifting dark fae, and court intrigue with a few surprises thrown in for good measure. It is also written in Zoey’s signature style where the words just start melting in your brain and you forget that you are even reading a story. But most importantly, with only 236 pages, you get to have a satisfying ending when you are done.
Perfect snack for romantasy fans!
Tanya’s love for books has been a lifelong passion that she likes sharing with others. Reading is also the thing that relaxes her after a day of juggling the many responsibilities that come with being being wife to an amazing man, mother to four great kids spread around the world, business manager, and farm hand on their place in southwest Missouri; home to Akaushi cattle and a menagerie of pygmy goats, horses, chickens, dogs and cats.
